Make a team of weight loss buddies and either compete against each other individually or form smaller teams!
  • If you have no one to be competitive with, make the goal that you have inevitable. Basically you tell someone you trust that if you don’t achieve a certain goal, then you have to do something for that person that you would really hate doing! It doesn’t have to be over all weight loss. It could be a goal such as not eating junk food for a whole week. If you fail this, you are held accountable to your trusted person and have to carry out your hated task for them. This task could be wash their dog, pay them a certain amount of money you’d find it hard to part with or clean their toilet. You must hate it and definitely not want to do it! The inevitable task must be something you hate, or it defeats the purpose of motivating you to achieve the stated goal.

What is important is that you don’t lose the motivation to keep going. Achieving the small goals will make it seem like time is passing by much quicker. By making it more fun and by making goals more achievable in the short-term, long-term success is more likely to follow.

I’ve noticed that even the best diets don’t offer much help (most don’t even mention this issue) when it comes to how to dress your shrinking body when you don’t have the money to replace your wardrobe every few weeks or so (and honestly, who does have that, plus all the time it would take to shop?). Here’s how to stay stylish and feel well-dressed in the real world, while also not blowing your budget as you see your weight loss efforts pay off in the coming months, in just three steps:

1. Cull your closet!

Take everything out of your closet and try it on, in front of a mirror. You’re going to make 3 piles: Keep, Give and Toss.

Keeps go back in your closet. They fit, flatter you, are quality basics, or you love them. If it’s quality but it’s getting too big, consider having it altered. Jackets, skirts and pants can all be taken in by up to three sizes by a skilled seamstress.

Gives are still good, but not on you. You haven’t worn them in the last couple of years, they are more than two sizes away from where you are right now, they were a ghastly retail mistake or an unfortunate gift, they just don’t suit you and never did, you’ve always hated that colour or style or you’ve always loved it, but it doesn’t love you. The better ones can go to a consignment store or charity; the truly unwearables are added to the third pile.

Toss in the bin – anything that is stretched out, faded, ripped, stained, ugly, huge on you, way too small, or you’ve had forever (handbags or other accessories don’t count. Keep them). Only exception: keep one old tee shirt and pair of shorts or jeans for messy jobs, like bathing the dog or painting the den.

2. Survey what’s left and what you need

This should leave you with a select group of truly useful clothes plus lots more space in your closet. Take stock of what you have, and what’s missing, but only for the current season. In summer, you will need one pair of jeans that fit, a couple pairs of shorts (or capris), four tops and, depending on your work culture, either two good, basic pairs of pants (navy, brown, tan, gray or black) and a jacket or cardigan and possibly one skirt.

For summer weddings or nights out, you’ll want one outfit – maybe a summer dress and pretty sandals. Round out with a bathing suit that flatters the body you’ve got, beach cover up, and your accessories, and don’t forget work-out wear if you go to the gym and two bras that fit you properly and are comfortable (throw out the old ones).

3. Go shopping!

For colour and variety, you’ll want a few tees or bright tops, and maybe a trendy piece such as a striped A-line skirt you can wear to work or on the weekend. You could pay a lot for these pieces, but because you are only likely to wear them for one season (you’ll be so much slimmer by next summer), economize with the cheap-and-cheerful versions at big box and grocery stores. They may only look good for 8 washes or so, but by then you’ll be thinking about next season.

When dieting, I’ve found great bargains at consignment and charity shops. If you do decide to splurge, invest in something you can enjoy for years to come, such as a great tote (a fabulous non-food reward for losing your most recent 10 pounds). With shoes or sandals, keep in mind, if you have a lot of weight to lose, that your shoe size will likely also change. You don’t need a stuffed closet to dress well for right now, just a few basics, filled out with a few seasonal pieces, to look well-dressed in clothes that flatter and fit.

Of course, there are going to be rules and guidelines that a person must follow in order to be successful with Losing That Unwanted Weight. However, none of these rules and guidelines are ever printed on the package of an item. With that being said, let me get down to nitty gritty of this successful Program For Diet.

1. Small goals work better for a body as well as the mental health than a huge drastic drop and it is easier to maintain as well.
