New Life Being Breathed Into Green Gardening

January 2nd, 2012 § 0

Move over for the next generation… the green movement’s here to stay! It’s taken over our TV programs, big box marketing strategies, and has captured the hearts and minds of many. The green movement is replacing consumerism with practical economy that is user-friendly to our overburdened landfills. But nowhere is it evidenced more than with the new wave of organic gardening.

Surprisingly, the first green movement began in the early 1900′s in a reaction to synthetic fertilizer at the beginning of the new industrialized agriculture. Somehow, it died a quiet death until it heated back up, starting in 1990. Since then, the demand for organic foods has increased an impressive 20% each year.

And rightfully so! If the past few decades has taught us anything, it’s that if we want to stay healthy, eating foods that we won’t have to sneak up on, we need to get re-acquainted with our back yards and turn them into something useful like a vegetable garden. Even better is planting those gardens with heirloom seed and organically enriched soil. These savvy gardeners’ do not use fungicides that have the dubious distinction that 90% of them contain carcinogens, followed by herbicides at 60% and insecticides at 30%.

Many of the new generation of green gardeners have traded the corporate life for one that involves hands-on communion with the earth as they teach older generations what it means to live an unfettered life. Demographics speak for themselves. A large portion of young adults are growing their own fruits and vegetables and some have gone a step further: choosing to live off-grid, unplugged from dependency on the power line. Although they may not be the consumers their parents were (most live a simpler lifestyle), they do possess the cash flow for discretionary spending that has caught the attention of corporations.

In many ways, the new generation of green gardeners is a recycled version of the pioneers our forefathers were, living a sustainable lifestyle that demands the resurgence of root cellars, home canning, and heirloom and heritage garden seed. Holistic medicine and raising small farm animals has also experienced a resurgence of interest while composting and recycling are being breathed back to life. But it doesn’t stop there. New demands are also for water containment systems, solar panels, and wind-driven energy. And just as organic gardening interests are opening up new business opportunities for both large and small businesses smart enough to listen, the use of building materials such as straw bale, cordwood, cob, and rammed earth for alternative forms of shelter has brought the most inventive entrepreneurs great rewards.

If there was an unexpected emergency, do you have a 72-hour emergency kit in your car that will get you home safely? And when you arrive is there enough food, water and medical supplies to see you and your loved ones past a short-term or long-term crisis? If the answer is no, Survival: Prepare Before Disaster Strikes offers common sense, drama-free advice on bullets, bandages and food storage that won’t break the bank!

Survival: Prepare Before Disaster Strikes is now available in paperback and as a Kindle download on Amazon.

Motivate Yourself By Knowing Your Weight Loss Goal

May 24th, 2011 § 0

Motivation is probably the most important factor when setting and achieving any goal. It’s what will stop you having fast food on your way from work instead of making something healthy when you get home. It’s what will stop you from snacking on a bar of chocolate. And it’s what will get you to the gym instead of spending the night in front of the TV.

Of course we’re all human and none of us are perfect, but if you can be sure exactly why you want what you want your chances of failure are reduced. It could be the simplest thing in the world to do, you could have all the equipment and information there is, but if you don’t know why you want it, or don’t want it badly enough, you’ll probably never get there.

On the other hand, if you know exactly what you want and exactly why you want it, you’re far more likely to get it. A stressful day at work or feeling a bit under the weather won’t be enough to prevent you going to the gym, or enough to start you comfort eating, because you can see the bigger picture and the long-term goal you’re aiming for.

So think for a minute about exactly why you want to lose weight. What is it that’s motivating you? Is it to look better? If so, why? For yourself? To keep your partner happy or to attract a new one? Is it for health reasons? Is it to look good for a specific event like a wedding or vacation? Is it so you can comfortably wear the clothes that haven’t fit for the last few months? Or is it something else?

Whatever the reason you need to be sure what it is so that, when things get difficult, you can focus on it to help you stay on track.

Also, are you motivated more by moving away from pain, like not wanting to be overweight, or towards pleasure, like having more energy and feeling and looking healthier? Whichever it is doesn’t matter, one is not better than the other, but it will help you to know which is the most effective motivator for you. Always remember though, setting goals, working towards them and finally achieving them is supposed to be an enjoyable, rewarding experience.

Keep things as light-hearted and as positive as possible, even if you have to punish yourself!

Why You Will Never Lose Weight With That Attitude

April 8th, 2011 § 0

It’s not your fault. If you snack when you read, watch TV; grab a take out on a Friday night, over time these things become habitual and habit can be a very difficult thing to break.

Likewise emotions can also have an effect on our weight gain: we’ve had a bad day at work so we break open that Praline and cream ice cream and we feel great, if I’m bored at work (which can be more often than not!) then I find myself snacking, should we be exhausted then the last thing that I want to do is to whip out the pots and pans and cook.

The adage: “Old habits die hard” applies. But it is time to break them.

So, how do I achieve this I hear you ask?

I am a big proponent of the notion of changing things one day at a time, as this way by bringing change gradually the body becomes acclimatized to that change and won’t go cold turkey if you cut out chocolate altogether. Here are some other ways for you to change your behavior for the better:

Eating Habits:

1. Make sure that you have three meals a day and that you have two planned snacks.
2. Enjoy your food. Eating is a pleasurable experience and should be treated as such. When you put food in your mouth take your time to chew it and put your utensils down on your plate. Hesitate between bites.
3. Choose a place to eat your food. If you stay at your desk (and I’m just as guilty of this) then you will graze. Having a designated place to eat means that you will be able to fully enjoy your meal and that you won’t want to eat all day long.
4. Focus on eating. Don’t watch TV, read or work whilst you are having your meal. Through eliminating these activities, you are conditioning your mind to disassociate itself from snacking whilst watching TV.
5. Make sure that food is stored nowhere else in your house or office than the kitchen. If they are stored elsewhere then you will then be tempted to snack.
6. Don’t buy junk food. If you really want a burger or a pizza, learn how to make it yourself and that way you know exactly what goes into your food and what you can have with it. FYI when you cook your burger, griddle it or grill it as it will be slightly healthier than frying it.
7. I spoke to my Doctor recently about how to lose weight and she suggested that you serve food off a smaller plate as psychologically you feel as if you’ve had a decent meal and that way your mind will believe it also.
8. I hate wasting, but psychologically this makes sense: if you leave a bit of food on the plate at the end of your meal then it will signify that you’ve had enough and will make you think that you are full.

But it is not just your eating habits that must change in order to achieve the weight that you desire.

Behavioural Habits

Changing your behaviour shouldn’t only be limited to the way you eat. It’s fine to sit and watch TV, but do another activity whilst you are sitting down such as learning how to stitch or research on the web.

If you habitually go into the kitchen and eat then try and take up other activities to curb your hunger, such as going out for a walk, a jog. Take a long bath, or go and read a book.

Through occupying your mind with other activities and thus by making yourself feeling happy and contented, your mind will disassociate itself from the notion that you need food to make you feel this way.

It is a struggle, but then the things we want are never easy, and with grit and determination, you can achieve your goals.

Create Your Own Weight Loss Systems For Natural Fat Loss

April 6th, 2011 § 0

Tons of guys and girls are thinking about buying the inclusive fat loss plans that catch their eye either on the net or TV. Even though most of these weight loss systems certainly can lay out an effective approach for lasting fat loss, the bottom line is that most guys and girls who buy these programs don’t lose much weight at all. And the ones that do actually lose some weight, gain it back as soon as they stop using the system. If long lasting weight loss is your goal, then you have to use a fat loss strategy that you can follow along with for the long haul.

Based on my experiences, the most effective way to go about structuring a fat loss system for you is to search out a style that you both understand and like. You either need to really like the structure of the plan and actually enjoy using it or you need to at the very least be able to make yourself stick with it on a regular basis. Nothing about losing weight is easy, so it only makes sense that you should try to incorporate exercises and workouts that you actually enjoy.

If you don’t heed this warning and you try to use a weight loss system that you don’t like, at some point down the line you will eventually stop doing the things that you need to be doing in order to lose weight. Most people try to overdo their fat loss approach in the beginning and wind up running themselves into the ground on the whole weight loss process in general. Instead of utilizing a few simple lifestyle changes, they go for it all right up front and get way too aggressive with their approach to either their diet or exercise program and because of that they melt down and stop doing anything at all.

I really think that the best way to structure your fat loss plans is to simply put into practice one simple strategy at a time. Making sure that once you implement a change to your current lifestyle, you need to hold on to that change and make it a habit. If you adopt this strategy, you will be able to totally change your current lifestyle into one that is more friendly to weight loss and health. The cumulative effect of this approach to losing weight is that you will be able to make significant changes to your lifestyle over time, but you won’t burn yourself out in the process. You basically teach yourself how to live a bit healthier one small change at a time until before you know it you weigh a lot less and you’re healthier.

If you really believe that that you have to spend a few hundred dollars on one of the fat loss programs that you’ve seen on TV, definitely do some research into the plan before you buy it. If you take the time to really look it over before making a decision, then you will have a much better idea of whether or not you can implement the plan for the long haul.

How you structure your weight loss systems can be the difference between losing a lot of weight quickly and not seeing any results at all. Find out how to create quick and effective weight loss systems that will help you burn fat and get into amazing shape.

Cross Trainers Can Increase Fitness And Help With Weight Loss

March 31st, 2011 § 0

As people across the world become ever more conscious of their bodies, there is an increased demand for machines to help achieve that body beautiful. One of the best answers in this regard has been seen with the introduction of cross trainers; offering users the opportunity to burn calories and provide excellent cardio workouts.

What is particularly good with these machines in their ability to provide a complete workout solution for the whole body at once; rather than simply concentrating on specific areas at a time. This is excellent in itself of course but, further than that, also eliminates the need to buy many different costly, and space consuming machines.

Alongside offering the user the ability to exercise and tone every part of the body, they can also be adjusted to give increased difficulty and resistance. This is ideal for those who want to step up their training regime of course and, naturally, allows the machines to continue to be effective no matter what level of fitness a person reaches.

There are a number of cross trainers available which, though all offer much the same functions and results, differ in certain ways. The choice over which one to buy is of course a personal preference and, one type may work better for one person than another. With this in mind therefore, it is well worth testing each device before settling on a purchase.

In the home, the commonly used types of machines are elliptical and magnetic. Both work in much the same way, exercising the upper and lower parts of the body, as well as providing excellent cardio exercise for the major organs. Elliptical machines however will focus primarily on the cardio regimes, whilst magnetic resistance is better for those looking to build and tone muscle.

Elliptical machines also tend to be much noisier than their magnetic counterparts; using machines or belt driven systems to operate them. However, newer machines afford much quieter operation. For home use where some other form of interaction to exercise to, such as music or the TV, is needed however, magnetic machines may be better.

No matter which of the various different types of cross trainers are chosen, there is no doubt that they are an excellent tool to help those looking to increase their personal fitness, or lose and keep weight off in a healthy way, With many retailers available these days, offering deals through the year, there should be something to suit everyone.

The Food Belly Fat Loves

March 26th, 2011 § 0

Have you ever wondered how celebrities look fabulous constantly, regardless of what is going on in their lives? Do you ever notice how within weeks of having a baby, female stars look in tip-top shape? Why is this and how do they achieve it? If you have spent most of your life dieting only to find that you were unsuccessful, then you are already aware that dieting does not work for you and what is even more disturbing is that for most people it will never work. Imagine working extremely hard to lose weight, you manage to keep it off for 2-3 months, or even a year, then suddenly all the weight piles back on again. How frustrating and disappointing must that be and how unhappy you must feel. Only a small percentage of people in the population get results from dieting, you can throw any diet in front of them and they will lose weight. They have enough will power to stick to the diet, resisting any temptation to have a break and eat their favorite unhealthy snack. Not all of us are strong enough to ignore cravings or block out any psychological urges we are confronted with.

The sad reality is statistics show that 95% of dieters will never lose weight and keep it off if the focus is on diet and exercise alone. As obesity is rampant in out society and is becoming more accepted as normal, what we don’t pay attention to is that it is also a killer. With TV commercials and billboards advertising nutrient deficient super-sized fast foods, it is no wonder why people struggle to lose belly fat. Even when taking a trip down to the shopping mall, it is difficult to resist the sight of fatty and sugar filled food that is on display in abundance. These foods are processed foods containing chemicals, which are harmful to your body. Pizza’s, hamburgers, milkshakes, chocolate, cakes, sugar laced breakfast cereals, fizzy drinks… the list is endless. No matter how we try to escape, we are constantly bombarded with the food belly fat loves.

This food “termed” junk food has been given that name for a very good reason. When you come to the awareness of what it is made from, the name fits perfectly. No matter how well it is disguised, brightly coloured and highly flavored, often to mask its repulsive smell, its life-giving nutritional value is near to zero. For example less than 20% of chicken is present in a chicken nugget, the remainder of it is chicken skin, mechanically removed protein from the bones and water full of artificial flavoring and coloring.

Doughnuts, candy bars, biscuits and ready made tinned and packet foods are laden with ingredients that do little or nothing for our health. Dangerous fats that cause damage to our heart and arteries, additives that trigger hyperactivity and skin conditions such as eczema. The most worrying thing is that this type of food is highly addictive and directed towards children, who once addicted, find it difficult to shake off the bad eating habits and are likely to end up as obese adults.

In life we are faced with choices, things we can control and contrary to what you have been taught or have experienced so far about losing weight, you don’t have to be stuck in that body for the remainder of your life. In order for this transformation to take place, it first requires a totally new mindset and you need to address the underlying cause. Unless you address the root of the problem and deal with it, you will continue to struggle and see no results.

What is about to be revealed to you, will enable to understand the root of your problem and deal with it effectively and permanently. With the help of leading scientists, extensive research has been carried out to establish the mechanisms in our body that control our behaviour. In our brain there is a neurotransmitter called serotonin, it is found in the central nervous system and in the intestine. It is responsible for the feeling of well-being and is also called the “happy hormone”.

Serotonin also works with our bio-balance and it has been discovered that when our bio-balance is misaligned, your serotonin levels decrease, which cause feelings of unhappiness or even depression. This action causes the natural chemical in our brain dopamine, to become over active. Dopamine is responsible for transmitting craving signals to our body. It could make us crave for anything from unhealthy foods that cause stomach fat, to nicotine, alcohol or compulsive behaviours in order for our brains to release more serotonin. When serotonin is released it causes a temporary peak, when we are satisfied until the levels drop again, at that point dopamine kicks in, driving us into another cycle of addiction. This vicious circle continues until our bio-balance is in correct alignment.

Bio-balance is simply when we are free from negative emotions, damaging toxins and we are connected and in harmony with people and the world. With a healthy bio-balance you experience happiness, enjoy good health, high levels of energy and the ability to control your emotions and weight.

The Transformation Solution Program, has 18 defined stages you will be guided through, to enable you to suppress your brains cravings. On completion of the program you will have achieved a healthy bio-balance, which will enable you to end your uncontrollable cravings, unhealthy behaviours and double your fat burning ability, without starving or depriving yourself from food. As a result you will experience higher energy levels and an increase in your health. You will learn how to heal your emotions, be happy, live a more meaningful enriched life and make a difference in the lives of others.

As we have previously mentioned, typical diets are ineffective as they do not allow you to experience permanent weight loss and good health. If you want to find out how to overcome eating the food belly fat loves…

How Can I Reduce My Pooch Belly?

March 24th, 2011 § 0

So you’ve tried everything.

You eat well, you drink plenty of water and you exercise regularly, but you just can’t seem to get rid it, the dreaded pooch. Well it seems that diet and exercise may not be the only factors necessary for obtaining those washboard abs. You also need to have good posture. And not just in the case of keeping your head up and shoulders back. The problem is that in modern society we have become so used to sitting down, we sit down to watch TV, we sit down to travel and a lot of us spend hours each day sitting down at work.

Sitting down for long periods of time weakens the abdominals and glutes; this causes a muscular imbalance that leads to a condition known as Lordosis. Lordosis causes the base of the spine to develop an excessive curve; this pushes out the bottom of the stomach and creates that dreaded pooch.

So how can you fix the problem?

You need to strengthen up the muscles that have become weak. There are a variety of exercises that can help to sort out the problem.

Abdominal Crunches. Crunches are similar to sit ups, but they are more effective as they do not strain your back. Lie on the floor on your back; bend your legs while keeping the balls of your feet firmly on the ground. Your spine should be flat again the floor. Bring your shoulders up towards your need, but do not pivot up using your hips, only bring your upper body as much as the stomach muscles allow. Tense the position for 3 seconds and slowly lower yourself back to the floor.

Pelvic Tilt. If practised diligently this exercise can reduce the curvature at the base of the spine. Lie down in the position described for the abdominal crunch then pull your pelvis off of the floor with your feet and upper back still touching the floor. Hold your pelvis of the floor for five seconds then slowly lower it back to the floor. Repeat 10 times.

Lunge Stretch. This exercise aims to loosen the hip flexors; they are the muscles that become tight from constant. This exercise is difficult to describe so here is a video that will show you how to perform the stretch properly. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BV5gMMxOwyY

Obviously a good diet is essential. The better abs you want, the better your diet has to be. For really great abs you should also start an exercise programme.

Substitutes For Water?

March 23rd, 2011 § 0

There was a commercial on TV some time ago you may have seen, it went: Milk! “It Does a Body Good.” I would add: Water! “It Does a Body Good.” The fact is we would only survive for approximately one week without water.

Other interesting facts about water include; the human body is made up of 60-70 percent water and each day the average adult loses 2.5 liters of it. Furthermore, water prevents disease by flushing the body out of waste and bacteria. I can understand a cup of coffee in the morning or a glass of soda with lunch and dinner but water literally keeps us alive and should not be overlooked.

But whether or not drinking water is good for us is really not the question. The question is “is there a substitute for drinking water?” The answer is yes and no. Yes, because the body can extract water from food through digestion. It’s actually the small intestine that absorbs the water.

For example, apples are 84 percent water and watermelon, one of my favorites, is 92 percent water. The same is true with vegetables such as broccoli which is 91 percent water or red tomatoes which is 94 percent.

The same is true for liquids such as a cup of coffee. Coffee is one hundred percent water. Soda has 12 percent and juice 81 one percent water. However, consuming too much caffeine or sugar, the key ingredient in some of these drinks, can be detrimental to your health. Even diet drinks can be unhealthy due to the artificial sweeteners inside them.

How much caffeine is too much? Drinking up to 300 mg or 1-3 cups is considered safe. A cup of coffee has between 90-150 mg of caffeine. Consuming more than that can lead to health problems like insomnia, nervousness, irritability and anxiety.

How much sugar is too much? The daily recommended amount of sugar is 40g. A 12oz can of cola has 39g of sugar. Too much sugar can lead to risks of diabetes, heart disease and weight gain.

To think you’re getting plenty of “water” without actually drinking water would be a mistake and a risk to your health. Drinking liquids other than water provides some hydration, but only in addition to consuming pure water.

On the other hand, the simple act of drinking pure water will help you stay clear of serious health conditions. What’s more, drinking water energizes you, controls your appetite, increases metabolism, reduces the risk of cancer, and alleviates joint pain, back pain and headaches. Moreover, water naturally moisturizes the skin, giving it a healthy glowing appearance.

Although, the body can extract water from food, drinking simple water is better for you. That’s because, it’s less work on your kidneys and liver. Liver and kidneys keep your blood clean by removing waste and toxins. A glass of water does not need as much filtering as a chocolate shake for example would need, therefore less taxing on your body.

So go ahead, have a glass of water instead of a glass of soda or cup of coffee and see the difference water will make for you.

Today’s Health Shop Products

February 20th, 2011 § 0

Congratulations are in order because you’ve purchased low fat milk and eaten an apple. By doing so you will, according to half of the internet, lose 5 kg’s by the end of business today and be capable of firing laser beams from your retina. In all seriousness, the net is flooded with hordes of unqualified information regarding healthy eating and weight loss, and all too many of these recommendations come with their own agendas.

Statistics are the favoured weapons of the layman since with just a slight creative touch, they can be altered to mean absolutely anything you want them to – ask your local government. In today’s society where fitness experts are going on TV and publicly endorsing scientific dribble, like the Power Balance Bracelet, and family doctors just pump you full of harmful antibiotics because you stumped your toe – we have to question our sources carefully. That being said, the catch phrase of a ‘healthy balanced diet’ is no lie or over exaggeration.

When experts publicly disagree who do you place your faith in? As someone from outside the health and fitness industry, who are you to separate value from hype? The fact of the matter is that we live in the age of free information flow, and although I’ve already pointed out that this has its down side, it also means that you can easily corroborate anything someone tells you.

Mix this in with a little bit of logic and common sense and you shouldn’t have any trouble finding the health foods which work for you. Any pill that solves all of your health woes is more than likely as scientifically valuable as the aforementioned Power Balance Bracelet. When someone attempts to sell you anything which would instantaneously cure a problem that has tormented humanity for hundreds of years – it’s time to check those credentials.

Fitness and exercise is clearly required, along with which ever products you eventually deem as a quality investment. Sure, it’s known that cutting bread and other carbohydrates out of your diet will cause you to lose weight, but remember that losing large amounts of weight when you’re not gaining additional vitamins and minerals, i.e eating healthily, will mean that your body will begin to break down. It’s all about balance. Lack of balance is what leads to poor health in the first place, so reversing that process in order to strengthen your body again is simple logic. Drop the hypochondria and stop listening to quacks – health is a science, not an art.

Fast Weight Loss Using Fat Burners

February 16th, 2011 § 0

Sometimes it’s easier to give up, accept your body for what it is, sit on the couch, eat and watch TV. You could try a diet pill to push you over the edge. Something likes a fat burner of an appetite suppressant that will teach your body to act differently.

So don’t get into old habits and undo the hard work you’ve done recently. I’m sure that even if you didn’t lose weight you probably have more energy and feel a bit fitter right? If you start losing a bit more weight you will become more motivated to continue with your weight loss regime.

It is crucial that you watch your diet too. Eating less is one way to really help lose weight. This doesn’t mean just eating one bigger meal and trying not to snack, it means eating several smaller portions a day. This way you will not feel hungry and even if you do you know you are very really more than an hour away from your next meal so you don’t need to sneak that biscuit or bag of crisps to “tide you over”.

The next part is exercise. Move more, burn more it’s that easy. Anything from walking to high impact aerobics, whatever your body can handle. Having a lazy day? Why not go for a jog and spend the rest of the day relaxing? Starting a busy day? Do light aerobic exercises in the morning to kick start your body, warm up and stretch your muscles. Burning fat is turned into energy, which in turn releases endorphins which gives you that great feeling.

For an added boost, fat burners can stimulate your metabolism and make your fat easier to burn so you lose weight quicker along with a low fat diet too. But what do fat burners do?

They are made to help your hormones increase your metabolism so that you burn more fat. They also work as an appetite suppressant to help you eat that bit less each day. These pills, combined with the diet and exercise program we already mentioned will get you well on the way to your dream body.

I’m Danielle and I write about diets and weight loss. I have recently been looking into fat burners and the thermogenic weight loss process and how it works.
