Weight Loss for Christmas – My Plan

December 13th, 2011 § 0

For the next six weeks, I am going to try the weight loss formula I set out in my previous post on how to get thin in six weeks. Starting today, I am going to do exactly what is outlined in that post and then, in six weeks time, I will report my results. I may give an intermediate progress report, but if I do, it will not report results in terms of weight loss. That’s because I am not going to weigh myself, after today, for the next six weeks.

So my current weight is: 209 lbs (94.8kg) or 14st 13 lbs in old money, so to speak and this is the heaviest I have ever been in my life, so it is a good time to start. I have only dieted once before, seriously. That was about fifteen years ago. At that time, my starting weight was 14st 9 lbs (205 lbs, 93 kg) and I eventually lost exactly two stones (28 lbs, 12.7 kg).

The diet I followed that enabled me to lose that weight consisted of red and green days. On a red day, you could eat as much meat as you wished and on a green day you could pretty-much eat all the carbs (with certain exceptions) you wanted. There were rules for the other things that made up the diet. The weight loss was slow and steady and I felt that I was eating more healthily when I was on that diet.

The problem came after I had lost the weight because, in the process of adjusting to what I considered to be a normal diet, my body decided that it should put on an extra two stones to cope. The thing was that I had become bored with eating certain things during the six months it took to lose the weight. In fact, even today, fifteen years later, I still cannot look a baked potato in the eye.

What’s different about the plan on this occasion is that I don’t intend to change my eating habits very much at all, so I think that part of it should work out ok. What I intend to do to lose the weight is to address the things mentioned in the above article:

  • Stop Drinking Fizzy Drinks
  • The E Word
  • Your Five a Day
  • Drink More Water
  • Program Your Mind for Success
  • Stop Weighing Yourself

Now, as it turns out, I don’t really drink fizzy drinks very much at all, so for me, it will be the other things on the list that will be responsible for making the difference. I am going to exercise every day for the next six weeks and, in addition, I am going to follow the remainder of the advice on eating fruit and vegetables and drinking plenty of water. Finally, I am going to make use of positive affirmations for programming my mind.

Six weeks from now is mid-December, so that’s when I will next get on the scales. Will this work? Well, of course, I don’t know, but we’ll see in six weeks time. If it does work, I am confident that it is a living plan that I can continue and that, I think, is an important key to keeping the weight off once it has gone.

One last thing: as someone pointed out when I last wrote about this idea, your doctor’s advice should always come first especially if you are suffering from a medical condition. That said, do you want to get thin in time for Christmas? Well, why not join me for the next six weeks?

Weight Loss – Looking Inside for the True You!

October 23rd, 2011 § 0

We’ve all been there. Whether it’s the after holiday bulge (I’m just staying warm for the winter!), the extra slice of chocolate cake (what’s it going to hurt me?), or the blues munchies (I NEED that candy bar right now), most of us can say that we have struggled with weight gain in some form or another. With weight loss programs being a billion dollar industry and obesity still being a major concern one has to wonder- how can we keep off the weight without completely losing it financially and emotionally?

We all know how to eat right and we know the basic tried and true methods of weight loss- eat healthy, exercise, don’t eat junk food. There are literally hundreds of successful diet programs for Americans to choose from. Why is it then that people still have problems losing the weight and keeping it off. Why is obesity still such a problem?

Research has shown that weight loss is not about the diet, it’s about your individual thought process. One of the most effective treatments in treating binge eating is cognitive and behavorial therapy. There are ways to approach dieting and exercise in a way that is healthy for both mind and spirit and encourages success for the long run instead of short term effects.

Emotional reasoning – Learn how to analyze your emotional triggers and response systems. Every day is a new day and the journey to health is a life long process not a fixed journey with a set end point. Some days are harder than others and learning how the mind reacts to certain situations is crucial for determining a healthy and fresh outlook on dieting and exercise.

Think positive- Often times when people diet they develop a black and white perspective. “I tried a diet but then I went off so I have failed”. You can’t eat one cookie and say, “I failed, I’ll never lose weight”. Thinking positive has been proven to have immediate effects on the mind. If your thoughts about the future and present are always positive you will be able to stick to a diet better and with more success.

Be human- Human beings fail, it’s all part of the process. The trick is learning how to get back up after we fail and learning how to do it better. Ok, so you had that whole bag of cookies. Minor set back, what can you do next time you have that temptation? (Hint: Walk AWAY from the cookies next time).

A life coach can help you set standards and stay true to your goals and be a positive influence in your life. A trained professional will be able to quickly identify the negative triggers and help you find positive new ways of thinking.

The most important thing is to realize that obsession about losing weight is not going to help anything. Our body is only a shell that carries YOU. So treat your shell inside and out with loving and kindness.

Weight Loss and Fitness Records – 7 Reasons

September 30th, 2011 § 0

How can a log of your activity help you to progress with your fitness and weight loss goals? It’s important to lots of people who are interested in losing weight. As trainers they even work with fitness progression on a full time basis. Most just starting think about it briefly, then proceed to just get started doing whatever they feel they need to do. They usually just pass over it lightly if at all, not believing that it can actually have an effect. Sometimes they are just indifferent. But the truth is that recording your progression can be a powerful tool in weight loss.

So what exactly is the truth here? Exactly how does recording your fitness progression help? Why really should you care? Let’s see if any of those good reasons apply for you or anyone you know.

First, to know where you want to go it is important to know where you are beginning. It is important to take a baseline, record your body composition. This will include your weight, measurements around different stations of your body, a before photo, and use a specific piece of clothing to try on. Later you will use it again to see how it fits. Fine, I comprehend your objection that it is difficult to take body measurements. And yes, that is a valid observation. But examine it from this perspective, how will you know your progress if you don’t know where you started? I am sure that you can get a friend or family member to help out in that regard.

Second, your goal will be in writing. It will be clear and defined. The reason this is good is that if you have abstract goals you will feel you have no real direction and may start to lack motivation. As a beginner motivation is sometimes the hardest thing to muster. Clear defined goals have a motivating effect.

Third, records can help to ensure that your routine is well balanced. As humans we tend to work at we excel at and ignore what we are not good at. Part of a good fitness program includes strength training, cardio training, and of course nutrition.

Fourth, your memory is not perfect. For a while you may remember what you were doing since you are beginning. But after a little progress you will find yourself saying “Now, what did I do last week?”

Fifth, back to motivation. You may come to a point where your progression begins to plateau or at least it will be harder to make progress. Your fitness records will give you a chance to look back on where you were and see the progress you have made and motivate you further to keep pushing toward your goals.

Sixth, it can help to prevent an injury. If you record how you felt after a certain exercise it can help to determine if it is safe for you. If you had joint pain after a certain number of reps of an exercise you may need to reduce the number of times you use this exercise in your fitness routine.

Seventh, records gives you accountability. If your goal is to eat healthy writing down what you eat throughout the day can show you at what times you get hungry, your cravings, and where you can improve in your eating habits.

After you have observed all of the reasons and had a chance to evaluate them, it will be up to you to decide whether or not the case for recording your fitness progression is a compelling one or not.

Just keep an open mind and take into account the reasons. Maybe you really ought to give more thought about recording your fitness progression.

Weight Loss – Is Your Weight Goal Thrown Off Track Due To These 3 Things? Here’s What To Do Instead

September 20th, 2011 § 0

On your journey to reaching your weight goal you may encounter many obstacles along the way. Some obstacles you can overcome very easily while others can really derail your progress and throw you off track. However, if you remain diligent you can quickly bounce back.

In this article, I’ll outline 3 things that may take you off track and show you what you can do instead to keep you from either becoming derailed or to get you back on the road towards your weight goal.

#1 – Stress

Whether your stress is personal, family, work-related or otherwise, it can put a damper on your progress. Stress can lead to depression and other emotional issues and when the emotions are negatively affected it can result in overeating, loss of motivation and energy to workout.

Do Instead

Pay attention to what’s going on around you. Know your stress triggers, release any tension – take a deep breath in and let it all out and regroup. Walk away from the situation if you can and shift your thinking onto happier thoughts. If you are quick to respond you can drastically reduce the effect of the stress and elevate your emotional vibration up and above your current stressed condition.

#2 – Misunderstanding the scale reading

Ever got on the scale expecting to see that you’ve shed some more pounds only to find out that you had not even budged since the last time you were on there? I know I have and it’s such a discouraging feeling which can make you feel like you’ve done all of that work and still not getting the results you want.

But in reality, what’s happening, if you’ve been committed to your workout, is that while you were focusing on weight loss you’ve been building muscles and shedding fat. At first this may not show up on the scale as an accurate measurement of your progress and here you’re thinking that nothing is happening.

Do Instead

Use other forms of measurements as well to gauge your progress. I usually go by the way my clothes fit. I also take pictures in the same outfit to show my progress. I find these to be quite reliable and encouraging than using a scale.

#3 – Going it alone without any support

Trying to get to your ideal weight can be a lonesome journey if you’re going it alone. Say you come from a family and also have friends that are overweight; it can be quite a struggle to create this change in your life. And when at first you seem not to be making progress and don’t have that encouragement, you can end up right back at square one.

Do Instead

If you’re the type of person that can keep yourself accountable and stay on track that’s great. But most people, especially at the beginning of change, need someone to encourage them along through the early stages where they are most vulnerable to giving up.

Find a friend who’s willing to work with you to help keep you on target. If you don’t have anyone that can do that find a community group or go to the gym. I’ve had one of my daughters in the past help me out and boy did she ever keep me on my toes. I also use my articles as a way to keep me accountable to my readers. And now we have a family competition on to keep me even more diligent in reaching my goals.

Changing your life may seem like an overwhelming frustrating process. But it doesn’t have to be if you’re given simple doable step-by-step strategies that will get you from where you are to where you want to be and experience a transformed life.

Fat Loss 4 Idiots Review – No Need to Starve Yourself or Do Any Work Out to Lose Weight

September 17th, 2011 § 0

With every beginning of the year we all have the same wish, and that is to lose weight or get in shape so that we can look good and be healthier. I have been doing that for many years and have tired so many hard to follow diet or work out regime just to fail in the end.

Losing weight is not only for a better body image, more importantly, it is a matter of having a healthier body. With that being said getting into shape is no easy task, I am sure all of you agree with me that most diet program out there are just too hard to follow and having to work from morning to night leaves us with very little time to work out. But the good news is that Fat Loss 4 Idiots helps you get around this problem. This program is designed to provide you with everything you need from advice to tips and tools that can help you lose weight.

I discovered Fat Loss 4 Idiots while having dinner with one of my colleague about two months ago. I noticed that he was losing weight, but based on his diet I couldn’t figure out how he was doing it. He wasn’t counting calories, he wasn’t eating low fat foods and he certainly wasn’t doing and exercise.

Finally I decided to ask him about it and he told me about the program that promises people they can lose nine pounds in a matter of 11 days. This is not one of those low calorie or low fat diet. It is something totally different. You don’t have to do any calorie counting. Most weight loss programs would require you to do some kind of exercise in order to lose weight but not this one. No strenuous workout is needed as a part of this program because exercise is not required to lose weight with it. If you want to do some exercise then that is just fine, but it is not necessary to do so.

This program takes advantage of the fat burning hormones. These hormones help you lose weight the natural way. The program makes use of a unique diet, which increases the production of said hormones and help burn those excess fats. This is why you have 4 meals a day and the results prove that it works.

With all that being said the best part about Fat Loss 4 Idiots is that the program is easily accessible online. Fat Loss 4 Idiots provided me with useful tools and information that cannot be found anywhere else. I thought I knew everything there is to know about losing weight, but it turns out I was missing the bigger piece of the jigsaw puzzle.

Weight Loss by Drinking One of the World’s Most Popular Beverages – Tea

September 16th, 2011 § 0

Forget fasting, starvation diets and strenuous exercise. Weight loss could be as easy as brewing a cup of tea several times a day, since this is already a popular pastime of the western world. This seems like an ideal solution to the perfect body, however there is one catch.

There are several types of tea available on the market and the most common being black tea. And I know for sure that this really is a popular tea with the British getting through 165 millions cups per day!

The Catch

Unfortunately, as much as we (especially the Brits) love black tea we need to move towards the more exotic variety of teas including Green, Oolong, Pu-erh, Porangaba, Okinawan, Feiyan, and several herbal varieties. All of these provide the following benefits.

Metabolism Boosting

Replacing your cup of regular black tea with a cup of green tea has been shown to significantly increase the body’s metabolic rate and therefore speeding up weight loss. Pur-erh tea also has been shown to have a similar effect on the metabolism.

Increasing Energy Levels

Porangaba tea has been recently shown, particularly in the media, to have a dramatic effect on energy levels whilst suppressing the appetite, therefore making it easier to shift those excess pounds.

Health and Longevity

Okinawan tea is always being promoted for its health benefits, namely because the Okinawans are known for having one of the longest life expectancies in the world and have very few issues with obesity. Clearly, this may not all be down to them drinking tea as they also have a nutritious diet filled with plenty of fish and vegetables. However, the tea will certainly play a part in their slender figures and longevity.

Cholesterol and Body Detox

Feiyan tea is made with several different ingredients including lotus leaves, cansia seeds, vegetable sponge and green tea. It boasts several slimming benefits such as reduced bloating and detoxes the body as well as possibly reducing blood fat and cholesterol levels.

Herbal

Herbal teas that include dandelion or nettle can help eliminate excess water and therefore reduce weight. Fennel which is also found as a secondary ingredient in many herbal teas has appetite-suppressing properties which help with your weight loss program.

As you can see tea has many weight loss benefits but remember it is only a part of your weight loss journey. Merely drinking tea will not have a significant effect on reducing your weight, since this can only really be achieved when you follow a weight loss program. Of course whether you are on a weight loss program or not drinking tea is always good!

Weight Loss – How Does It Happen?

July 26th, 2011 § 0

The first question is why do we get fat in the first place? Well our bodies are designed to store any extra food energy in the form of fat. This is good, the human race would not have survived if this was not possible. To ensure that we would want to eat foods that would provide extra energy; humans have a special fondness for sweets and fats. Back in the hunter/gatherer days this was great. When we could get extra food energy we wanted to eat those foods that would give it to us. No problem! Until we settled down.

It still wasn’t that much of a problem, for starters, everyone was working hard. But in the last 30 years we worked even less. It was discovered that when secretaries switched from manual to electric typewriters – the things we used before computers- they gained on average seven extra pounds. Once we had to get up and turn on the TV and go back and set down. Our disposable income grew so we spent our food budget on more goodies. More food energy got stored. We bought more work saving devices. Small things, but they added up.

Theoretically it takes 3500 calories (kilocalories) to make one pound of fat. If we eat more than what we use up it gets stored. Over time this can add up. We either eat less or we move around more. So if we find away to cut out 3500 calories we will lose weight – right? Well it isn’t as neat and tidy as that. When we cut back on calories after awhile something called, “diet induced adaptive thermogensis” occurs. Our body adapts so we can live and not gain weight on fewer calories.

This is where exercise comes in. It boosts our metabolic rate and helps us burn more calories. Again this is great in theory but it takes a lot of additional exercise to burn huge amounts of calories. It is an important part of the whole equation but unless you are exceptionally fit you will not lose an extra pound each week by exercise alone. A combination is best. We all need a bare minimum of 30 minutes of exercise three times per week.

This sounds simple but it is not. Some people naturally gain and retain weight easier. These people have a more difficult time losing weight. Most people who have dieted have hit a “plateau”, a time when they could not lose weight regardless of how carefully they ate and exercised.

There is another theory on weight loss and that is the one espoused by the proponents of the low carbohydrate diets. These people believe that it is excessive carbohydrates especially those from refined flour and sugar that has caused the increase in obesity. This is fairly controversial, although in general even the more conservative food experts recommend that only a quarter of your food should come from carbohydrate dense foods such as potatoes, bread, pasta and grains.

The low carbohydrate diets start you off with meat proteins with some vegetables and gradually move to more carbohydrate dense fruits and vegetables. Eventually you get to eat small amounts of whole grain foods. This theory of weight loss is not supported by main stream food science. However, the limiting of refined carbohydrates is.

What does all this mean for you as a dieter? Well first and for most you need to eat a healthy well balanced diet. Secondly you need to add more movement into your life. Don’t just think in terms of exercise programs when you do this. Try doing active house work for 20 minutes at a time without a rest break. Park further from the stores when you shop. Do your own landscaping and do it yourself projects. Believe it or not there are exercise programs that can be done while you’re sitting down watching TV. Every bit counts in the fight to loss weight.

Weight Loss and Fitness Success: Why Less Is More

July 25th, 2011 § 0

Weight loss and fitness success were no concern of the hunters and gatherers in past ages.

They were too busy surviving.

The gatherer’s walked, bent down, stooped and picked things up from the ground. They stretched to pull down fruit from trees and bushes. They may even had to climb a tree in order to reach the higher places.

Hunters walked, ran, spied until they saw the animal, then readied themselves for the kill. Once prepared, they exploded with massive amount of muscle to kill the prey and carry the heavy animal back to their families.

What does that tell you?

They worked hard or they worked long. They didn’t do both at the same time.

Our bodies, muscle and other systems haven’t changed that much since the cave days.

Our habits have changed. We spend hours sitting, instead of walking, bending climbing, sprinting and carrying heavy objects.

Obesity develops. Gyms develop. Yo-yo diets develop. We gain weight, lose weight. We get gym memberships and hate the workouts. We quit. We make promises. We try and try and try.

But you know what? The fitness industry has it all wrong.

How many of us could stay with the Gwyneth Paltrow or Madonna program, workout 3 hours a day, 6 days a week for those marvelous bodies? Of course, they are paying a lot of money to the same trainer, whose job it is to push, push, push them, or they would have stopped long ago.

But that method works for the time that they are training. In other words, calories are burnt only while working out, but don’t continue burn after the workout.

How would you feel if I told you there is a way to workout that would enable you to burn calories for 10 days after the workout and have a permanent effect on success of your fitness regime and you’d lose weight?

Well there, is. It’s been around for a long time, but almost no one at the gym uses it. Why? heaven only knows.

Why Less is More…

The system is based on the following facts.

1. Muscle is denser than fat.
2. Exercising the same body parts more than once every 10 days leads to over training and injury.
3. Muscles burn calories after the workout is over because they are heavier and take more calories just to carry them.
4. Training the way most people are taught results in staying in a catabolic state. (Read on for more on that).

Work Hard or Long, But Not Both

Your body was meant to work long or hard, just as in the cave days, but not both.

So instead of doing the same workout every day or 3 times a week for long periods of time, you need to work your muscles for short periods of time, but to the point of…

Positive, Momentary, Muscular Failure

So what does that mean? Positive, momentary muscular failure occurs when you can no longer do another similar move. Your muscles just refuse to do it.

You should do that within 7-10 reps. If you go longer your muscles will fail, but it will be due to build up of lactic acid, not PMMF.

Then, you do not exercise that part of the body for another 10 days.

Why 10 days Rest? Anabolic vs Catabolic States

When you exercise, your body goes into a catabolic state. That part of the body hurts. After about 4-5 days, most people start exercising again, but that just keeps you in a catabolic state.

You want to go into an anabolic state, which is where the muscle repairs itself and builds itself up stronger. That starts to occur only after you stop hurting or in about 4 or 5 days. You rest your body for another 5 days or so.

During the catabolic state, the muscle breaks down; during the anabolic state the muscles builds itself up stronger.

It’s as though the body tells the muscle, “Wow, you really hurt. Don’t like that. I’m going to build you up so that never happens again.” So it spends the next several days building itself back up.

The exercise works the muscles; it’s the rest that builds the muscles. Anything else is keeping you in a catabolic state.

So, from now on, work hard, then take it easy.

Weight Loss – 7 Steps to Successful Weight Loss – Step 1

July 20th, 2011 § 0

Step 1. Write down all of internal rubbish that’s stopping you from sticking to your diet and exercise plan and being the person you really want to be. When it’s all down on paper, question its integrity

Take a pen and paper, (even if you are into computers in this first instance please use a pen and paper, you can always type it up later. The physical act of writing it all down is very powerful), and at the top write:

‘This is a list of all of the crap that is in my head right now preventing me from sticking to my weight loss program, being the size and shape I really want to be and living a healthy lifestyle. The stuff I use as an excuse for not being who I want to be and for not taking responsibility for my actions and my life’.

Powerful stuff eh?

OK so now list it all.

This is where you really need to spend some time to dig out all of the negative waste matter that is floating around in your head. I’m sure you have heard the expression ‘colonic irrigation’ where you flush all of the noxious waste from your digestive system. Look upon this as a ‘Cerebral Irrigation’ where you are going to flush all of the negative toxic emotional waste from your brain. Don’t hold back with this. Just as it is imperative you rid our body of unwanted waste it is equally as important that you do the same with your mind. Before you can move on to creating the new you, you need to deal with this crap you have probably been carrying around for years.

What excuses are you using today?

• It’s my metabolism
• It’s my job. I’m always sitting
• I was ok until I had the kids
• It’s the kids, how can I eat healthy when all they ever want is junk
• I don’t have enough time
• I’ve tried so many times before and failed I can never stick to diets
• I’m too busy every evening (watching the soaps!)
Once you have got it all out, read through each of the items and ask yourself a few questions.
• Is this based on any fact?
• Is it based on any reality, any real experience?
• If so, was that experience years ago when I was young and therefore not at all applicable to the person I am now?
• How much is this way of thinking limiting me in all areas of my life?
• Do I really want to continue carrying all of this negative baggage around with me?

Once you have determined that all of these negative beliefs are severely harming you in life then you need to repeat out loud:

TODAY I TURN THE COIN OF MY LIFE TO MOVE ON AND REVEAL THE NEW ME. I AM CREATING A FANTASTIC HEALTHY LIFESTYLE, THE ONE THAT I HAVE ALWAYS DREAMT OF AND DESERVED.’

Repeat these words aloud, over and over until it’s a real emotional experience for you and you are really committed to moving on.

Weight Loss – It’s All in Your Head

July 18th, 2011 § 0

Are you still scouring the newspapers, magazines and the internet for that miracle diet, that quick fix pill or that guaranteed weight loss program? Let me save you some time and a lot of money, you don’t need to do any of the above all you need to do is look in the mirror.

You heard me, get to a mirror right now and take a long, hard look, because the solution to your weight loss problems and indeed to the majority of your perceived problems is staring right back at you.

You see you can try all of the magic diets, all of the fad diets and even all of the sensible diets, but if your head is not in it then you will never achieve long-term success. Oh you may lose some weight for a period of time but you will always be on the weight loss roller coaster, forever yo-yoing up and down. Why do you think the weight loss business is so big and so successful? People keep coming back because the majority never actually succeed long-term.

If you really want to lose weight and have it stay off, so you not only reach your target weight and size but you actually maintain it, then the first thing you need to do is address your mental state, your subconscious beliefs that drive your relationships and actions and how you view the world.

I bet right now you have a nasty whining voice in your head saying something like ‘who does this guy think he is, I’m in control of my self’, ‘my problem with losing weight is’:

It’s my metabolism.

It’s my job. I’m always sitting.

I was OK until I had the kids.

It’s the kids how can I eat healthy when all they ever want is junk.

It’s my finances; I can’t afford to join a gym.

I don’t have enough time tried so many times before and failed never stick to diets.

I need to finish all of the food in the freezer before I can go buy healthier stuff I’ll start fresh next week.

I’ll wait until I get that promotion so I can afford a gym membership.

It will be easier when the kids go back to school.

I hate dieting but I’ll try.

I don’t like exercise.

I’ve always been this way.

I’m too busy every evening (watching the soaps!).

Did I miss any out? The real problem is if things are not working out for you it’s because you are thinking and focusing the wrong way.
