Fresh fruit is good, too, but be careful not to eat too much because the high-sugar content means higher calories. When you prepare and eat these foods, don’t add any salt. I’ve found that a good flavor substitute for salt is vinegar. I especially like balsamic and apple cider vinegar. I keep some in small spray bottles, then when I’m ready to eat my vegetables, just a few sprays on top gives it a nice, tangy kick. You can also experiment with some of your other favorite spices. There are also natural, amino acid sprays (you can usually find them at health food stores) that taste similar to soy sauce, but without the salt. I keep a bottle in my refrigerator and it’s great on salads! To help coax the excess salt and water out of your system, try drinking natural diuretics, which accelerate the rate of urination. Many of the over-the-counter diet pills contain chemical diuretics, which are harsh on your system. Some natural ones I recommend using when you want to lose weight fast are: green tea, lemon juice in water and cranberry juice. There are certain foods which help control water retention, too. Asparagus, cucumber, oats, tomatoes and all types of melon are very good at this and contain few calories. When you think of “burn” you’re on the right track. The scientific definition of a calorie is: “A unit of energy equal to the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram (or one milliliter) of water by one degree Centigrade.” Let’s look at it this way. If you took one pound of fat and set it on fire under a pot of water, you could heat 3,500 milliliters of water one degree Centigrade. That’s nearly one gallon. Or you could heat 100 milliliters of water thirty-five degrees Centigrade. Can you see how powerful the tiny calorie is? There are diets out there that promise you can lose three or four pounds of fat each and every week. That’s a lot of calories to burn! Even two pounds of fat is 7,000 calories. You’d have to burn off 1,000 more calories than you consume every single day to lose just two pounds a week. You can do that, but it’s going to be a huge adjustment for your body. When you’ve been used to certain eating habits, habits that led you to being overweight, it’s extremely difficult both physically and psychologically to abruptly cut out all that tasty stuff you’ve been eating. No matter what you think, we are creatures of habit, both good and bad. When you start your day you probably have a fairly consistent routine: shave, shower, brush your teeth, etc… Whatever you do, you probably do it in the same order because your brain has been trained to do it that way. You don’t really even have to think about it. Did you ever change the order of your morning routine and discovered later that you forgot to put your deodorant on or brush your teeth! It’s because your brain and body are used to the sequence of what you do and when you skip a step it picks up where it remembers and continues from there. It’s the same with eating. Think of the foods and beverages you eat and drink every day. A bottle of soda pop, for example, contains about 200 calories, all sugar. If you drink at least one bottle per day, you probably drink it at approximately the same time every day. That’s because your body is in the “habit” of knowing when it’s going to get its liquid sugar. Now think about everything else you eat. How much of it is junk food? If your diet consists of eating lots of junk food and you want to change, do it gradually, otherwise your body and mind will rebel to the point of not only going back to eating bad food, but probably eating more than before. Be kind to your body. Change one bad eating habit at a time. Let’s go back to soda pop. Many people will tell you to switch from regular pop to diet. That’s good for cutting 200 calories a day, if you only drink one, but your body will not get the sugar it expects from the diet pop and will want to get it elsewhere, like from a cupcake. Your mouth may be fooled, but your system won’t be. What I recommend is drinking a juice cocktail, which is just fruit juice mixed half and half with water and some ice. It’s refreshing, you’ll get some sugar, but not nearly as much and it’s from fruit, not corn sweeteners. Give your body time to adjust to this one eating habit change. You’ll know it’s changed when you mix yourself a juice cocktail without even thinking about it. The same way you used to grab a bottle of soda. Once you’ve comfortably changed this habit, move on to another. Take your time, though. Most failed diets happen because the dieter bites off more than he can chew, so to speak. Losing weight is a result, it is a result of your thoughts. Stick with me on this one! We all know that diets don’t work. 98% of people, that are on a diet are fat and for most of them the diet won’t make them thin or keep them thin long-term. Exercise also doesn’t work. I used to be a personal trainer and run a gym and I saw people that used to come in and workout religiously week after week and sure some got results but many dragged the same wobbly bodies in week after week month after month with no noticeable results. As a personal trainer this annoyed me and at times I became disheartened. I searched for solutions. I started to research and read books, because at the time my mindset was eat less, move more and that is the way most personal trainers and coaches think. But what I found may shock you.
