Honey Is the Oldest Food Known to Man

December 29th, 2011 § 0

When the summer comes again, you may one day find a bee in the kitchen window, buzzing away angrily, trying to escape. You might think him foolish not to know that he is trying to fly through a sheet of glass. Foolish? Bees are so clever that after centuries of study we do not fully understand them! Bees make honey. The world has known and appreciated that since the earliest times, and it is one of the oldest foods known to man.Today, while our scientists peer through their microscopes and do their best to see that the food we eat is of the highest benefit to us, the bees goes on producing, entirely by instinct, a golden fluid which is rich in minerals, vitamins and hormones, helping to give us health and energy.

Efficiency experts produce plans to run our factories efficiently-the bee hive has been a shining example since the dawn of time! There are three kinds of bee- the queen, who is the mother of the community, the male drones who father the children and do no work, and the workers who have dozens of different tasks to do. First comes the gathering of the nectar, which the bees make into honey. Nectar is found in flowers. When a bee lands in a flower it pokes it’s long tongue down to the nectar and sucks it all up through a tube into a special sac. When the sac is filled, it passes through into the stomach, where it is strained of impurities and returned to the sac. It is still nectar, you will notice, but as the bee flies home, chemical processes in it’s body change the nectar into honey. Will the honey be used as food by the bees in the hive? That depends on whether the hive contains a honeycomb. If the comb has yet to be built, the honey is made into wax which is used for building material.

If you could see inside the hive, you would find these wax-producing bees in clusters near the roof, for they need to be extra warm to make the wax. It emerges in little pockets in their bodies and is chewed so that it is mixed with saliva in the mouth. This is the building material they need; a lump of it is fixed to the roof and the honeycomb is built downwards, shaped into six-sided cells, so regular in pattern that they might of been cast from a mould image. The comb is complete and the bees are arriving back with honey which is to be used as food.

When they enter the hive, (and there are ‘policemen’ on the door to kill them or throw them out if they are strangers!) worker bees are waiting to relieve them of the honey, which they store away in a vacant cell in the honeycomb. The forager bee immediately flies off after more honey. So the work goes on, hour after hour. When the bee finds flowers containing nectar, how does it tell the others? By a strange and fascinating ‘dance’, a flight in circles or half-circles which in ‘bee-language’ indicates the direction.

The cells of the honeycomb are, of course, where the queen bee lays her eggs. These hatch out as grubs, and are fed by the ‘nurse’ bees with a diluted honey which is a sort of bee milk. When the grub has grown, it is sealed into its cell with wax, gradually undergoing changes which turn into a young bee. Then, ready for the outer world, it leaves its nursery by eating its way through the wax covering of the cell. There is no ‘childhood’ for the baby bee, for it very soon takes it place in life of the community. If it is a baby queen bee, it is born in a special type of cell and is given the best of attention! So the whole process begins again. But not, alas, for the poor drones. Their life of ease is ended by the worker bees, who sting them to death. The next generation of drones take their place, until later on,they too, face a similar fate. Yes, the bees lead highly efficient lives. But very ruthless ones, too!

What Is a Good Diet?

December 3rd, 2011 § 0

What is a good diet? A good diet supports health, i.e. satisfies daily energy and essential nutrient requirements. ‘Diet’ in this context refers to the food habitually eaten by an individual. A diet good for one person may not be so for another. Energy and nutrient requirements can vary significantly from one individual to another, depending on activity levels, metabolic rate, growth, pregnancy, breastfeeding, and illness. Good eating habits are thus particular to each individual, and can change according to existing conditions.

It is advisable to have a chat with a general practitioner, when unsure about the current state of health, so that correct measures can be taken.

A balanced diet is composed of appropriate amounts of food from all food groups. These include grains; fruits and vegetables; meat, chicken, fish, and pulses; dairy; as well as sugar and fats. It is a good idea to get familiar with what constitutes a portion. If weight loss is desired good eating habits make success more likely.

People are getting larger in size all over the world. Unhealthy eating habits are a contributor to many common diseases, such as heart disease, cancer, and diabetes. Lack of exercise can further affect health. Inflexibility may develop, lean muscle mass be lost, brittle bones become evident due to lack of weight bearing exercise, and stamina weaken.

Changes to eating habits are often first considered when diagnosis indicates this to be a necessity. Maintaining a fit and healthy physique increases lifespan. This is a valid reason to start developing good eating habits, if this is already not the case.

Following a healthy diet also boosts energy, keeps memory in better working order, and stabilizes mood.

Eating small meals frequently throughout the day cuts down on hunger pangs and the need to overeat at one sitting. Three small meals enjoyed at regular intervals throughout the day, i.e. breakfast, lunch, and dinner, as well as having two to three snacks in between them would constitute a satisfactory eating plan. Eating regularly maintains an active metabolism. Eating less frequently is not better, and encourages weight gain.

Making healthy food choices that are enjoyed are more likely to be formed into a permanent habit. Habits cannot be changed overnight, and take perseverance and time to develop. This is a gradual process. Starting with one to two changes and adding to them at regular intervals can result in notable improvements before long.

It is advantageous to learn to listen to the body. Does eating continue when hunger is no longer present? Reducing the serving size by using appropriate portion sizes will in time make one feel satisfied quicker. Consuming as much food as previously will soon become not only difficult, but also uncomfortable. Food should be chewed properly, eaten slowly, and enjoyed in, preferably, a peaceful environment.

Good eating habits are beneficial in numerous ways. Old habits cannot be changed overnight. The effort it takes is a small payment in return for improved health, the resulting great feeling, and the energy radiating from a healthy individual.

It takes more than physical effort to become fit. With the right attitude fitness can be achieved at any age, and is generally followed by improved health. Sufficient knowledge about the subject is required before pursuing a fitness oriented goal. Visit http://CardioExercisesAtHome.com/ to get more informed.

Which Is the Best Fish Oil for Children? Dos and Don’ts

October 2nd, 2011 § 0

Tired of your child’s mood swings?

If you plan to start giving your child oil taken from fish then I would like to provide you with all the necessary information required for you to make an informed choice as to which is the best fish oil for children.

It can be difficult in choosing the most effective and safe supplement due to the fact that there is a high risk of toxins being included and subsequently impure oils on the market. Any legitimate company will have an analysis certificate on their website which you can view to ensure that your choice is the correct one for your child. You should also be able to verify the species of fish used for making the oil. The website should also contain information regarding the clinical trials and laboratory tests undergone in making the supplement. So, the three basic points you must ensure before you set out to buy a supplement are purity, freshness and constituents of the product e.g. DHA (Docosahexanoic Acid) and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid) levels.

In buying the best fish oil for children we must make sure that the oil is pure, this purification can be achieved by it going through the process of molecular distillation. Molecular distillation isolates and takes out any contaminants. This process makes sure that any harmful PCB’s are removed which can cause cancer. The best supplements come from fish that live in fresh and clean waters.

Fish can undergo oxidation therefore they should be properly cared for before the oil is extracted from them. Care is also required after the oil is extracted and it should be kept fresh, preventing it from going rancid, as the rancidity can travel from fish to oil extra care must be taken. To check for freshness of oil you can cut open a capsule and smell the gel. A fresh supplement smells like ocean water and this will confirm that it is the best fish oil for children of any age.

There are two types of essential fats found in omega 3 from fish oil, DHA and EPA (Eicosapentaenoic Acid). Both are good for you, however from research carried out it has been concluded that DHA fat is the one that carries the most benefits. It should be said that currently the majority of supplements available have a higher content of EPA than DHA. While there are still health benefits to be gained from EPA, DHA is thought to be more beneficial. Ideally the level should be about 250 mg or more per 1000 mg capsule.

A clinical trial found that when you mix tuna and hoki in the same capsule, the health benefit are amplified 250% without an increase in cost. The Hoki fish from clean southern ocean waters produces the best fish oil for children with no additives or preservatives.

What Is the Best Juicer Available?

October 1st, 2011 § 0

There are so many different kinds of juicers on the market today. There are handheld manual juicers, household electric juicers and commercial electric juicers. There are centrifugal juicers and masticating juicers. There are very inexpensive juicers and very, very expensive juicers. But all of these different kinds of juicers do not tell you what is the BEST kind of juicer on the market, or at least the best kind of juicer for you. I will attempt to break down some interesting things to consider when thinking of purchasing a juicer. First of all, you must first assess your needs when thinking of juicing and what purpose in your life your juicer will serve. If you are a person who is interested in fresh squeezed lemon juice for the occasional recipe, then perhaps a manual juicer is fine for you. If you have bad hands or arthritis, perhaps you need an electric juicer, but certainly not one with a powerful motor. Now, if on the other hand, you are someone who has been thinking about juicing and want to make it a part of your regular routine, then a manual juicer will not be enough for you. You will definitely need to look into the electric juicer and depending on how frequently you plan on using this machine, you need to think about the grade of motor you will find most beneficial. The most important thing you will need to consider is whether you want to buy a centrifugal or a masticating juicer. You may now be asking yourself, “What does this even mean?”

Centrifugal and masticating refer to the way in which the juice is extracted from the fruit or vegetable. With a centrifugal juicer there is a round blade that is somewhat similar in appearance to a cheese grater, which rotates at a very high speed. The fruits and vegetables are then placed in a chute and pushed down into the rotating grater. The force of the speed grinds up the fruit or vegetable and the juice then comes out of a separate opening into a catch container. The sheer speed at which the blade rotates creates for a high amount of heat which can actually have a harmful effect on the fruits and vegetables, potentially killing much needed live enzymes. This means that the nutritional value of the juice produced will not be of the highest possible quality. Centrifugal juicers tend to be very noisy and difficult to clean as well. There are many different parts and each must be cleaned separately and thoroughly to avoid contamination. Additionally, centrifugal juicers are not very efficient at juicing greens, especially dark leafy greens, which contain the most nutrients and health building ingredients. Wheatgrass is also exempt from centrifugal juicers as it will be destroyed in the juicing process. Centrifugal juicers are the most common type of juicer on the market though so many people do not even know to ask the difference between these two types of extraction. Masticating juicers work in a very different manner. These juicers use a single gear, called an auger which looks very similar to a large screw. The auger slowly breaks down the fruits and vegetables completely so that it literally rings out a considerable amount of fresh juice. Because the auger works at such a low speed, there is no heat produced and the live enzymes from the fresh produce are retained and the quality of the juice therefore superior. Additionally, the loud noise of the centrifugal juicer is not an issue with a masticating juicer, as the auger works at a lower speed, producing less noise as well. Perhaps the most exciting feature of the masticating juicer is the ease of clean up. With a masticating juicer, you will find you can spend less than three minutes total on clean-up, a great savings in time as compared to the centrifugal juicers available.

Choosing a juicer needs to be a personal and educated decision. The purchase of a new juicer should be considered an investment and as such, your use of the juicer needs to be thoroughly thought through and assessed. If there is one piece of straightforward advice I can give in this process however, it is to plan for more than you may initially believe you will need. Juicing can be very addictive in the sense that your body will begin to feel cleaner, stronger and more energized, a feeling that you are likely to want to maintain. Juicing can be a fun, creative process as you begin to learn more about the vegetables and fruits available to you and about the uses and specific benefits of each piece of produce. Make sure you choose the right juicer for your needs and get started juicing today!

Why Is a Rich in Fiber Diet Important? Fiber Food Sources

August 26th, 2011 § 0

Many people may be confused by the term fiber. But in order to get the health benefits from it, you don’t have to know all the scientific explanations and definitions, about what exactly dietary fiber is, and how it operates in the human body. Generally, dietary fiber is found in plants. While all plants contain some fiber, there are particular sources with high fiber concentrations, which makes them a better practical food-choice. If you include whole grain foods, fruits and vegetables into your diet, you usually get most of the fiber you’ll need, and also acquire a number of health benefits, like: lowering the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and constipation as well.

Officially, dietary fiber is a type of carbohydrate that represents an indigestible portion of plant foods. It consists of two main components:

  • soluble fiber that is readily fermented in the colon into gases and physiologically active byproducts
  • insoluble fiber – metabolically inert, absorbing water as it moves through the digestive system and out of the body

General daily recommendations for adult women are considered as 20 grams and more of fiber, and for men – over 30 grams.

The Many Health Benefits of Dietary Fiber

These are the general health benefits fibers are considered, studied and estimated to have:

  • As a type of carbohydrate fiber may reduce appetite – increases the food volume without increasing caloric content, thus providing satiety, or increases the time period for you to feel full.
  • Lowers variance in blood sugar levels and helps to decrease the total, and LDL cholesterol. By regulating the blood sugar levels, fiber may help to reduce risks, or symptoms of metabolic syndrome and diabetes.
  • Speeds the passage of consumed food through the digestive system.

Food Sources Rich in Fiber

Great food choices are whole fruits and vegetables, whole grain bread, breakfast cereals, and bean cultures.

  • legumes (peas, soybeans and other beans)
  • oats, rye and barley
  • some fruits and freshly squeezed fruit juices (plums, berries, bananas, and the insides of apples and pears)
  • whole grain foods
  • vegetables like: broccoli and carrots
  • nuts and seeds

Food sources like those are not only high in fiber, but vitamins and minerals as well. They are the gifts from nature – not processed and not chemically altered. Therefore choosing such natural sources rich in dietary fiber is an essential step toward highly nutritional diet and a number of health benefits as well.

What Is a Renegade Row? An Amazing Exercise to Strengthen and Tone Your Core That’s What!

August 9th, 2011 § 0

Are you, like everyone, pushed for time to exercise?

Here’s an exercise I learned a couple of years ago, and have been utilizing it in my own circuits regularly. It is also something that I suggest all intermediate level clients integrate into their program – especially those looking for core strength and body composition changes.

The Renegade Row.

Sounds dangerous? It is one of the most simple and time effective ways to build a rock-hard midsection, as well as core stability, and strength in the back and biceps.

Get into a press-up position whilst holding 2 x light-moderate weight dumbbells (DBs). Start with arms locked out, approx shoulder width, palms facing each other. Toes dug into floor at hip to shoulder width depending on strength levels. From a side view your shoulders, hips and ankles are all aligned perfectly. At no point should this line be broken. Any swinging should be minimized, or use of pure momentum.

The main benefit is in the intense and sudden transition of weight across the pelvis and core during the lifting of one arm, and thus the increase in strength and stability. Here’s how it’s done:

Alternating, row one dumbbell up to your armpit – using your back muscles ideally (pull from the elbow). Then the other. That is one rep!

A beginner female might do this with 3-4kg DB, a beginner male 6-7kg.

Here are 2 x advancements for the serious trainee, wanting to utilize even more muscle and burn more calories!

Renegade Row & Press

As above but in-between each pair of rows you do a perfect press up, keeping that body rigid. So press up, left DB up, right DB up = 1 rep. Try 10 reps. Not easy, especially with heavier DBs. This isn’t an endurance exercise, more about the core strength and stability so keep it challenging, strict and don’t go too high on the reps.

Renegade Row & T-Press

As above but one arm pulls up beyond the body and does a vertical press. You will twist your body to allow for shoulders to move so that they are aligned in a perpendicular fashion with the floor as you press the DB to the sky, to full lockout. Look upwards towards the DB as you do this. Then return to floor and repeat on other side. Add a press up in-between if you really want a challenge.

Use this complete upper body exercise alongside a basic compound leg movement like a squat or a lunge and you have a simple but gut-busting mini circuit you can do at home or in the gym with minimal equipment.

A1: Renegade Row & Press x 6-10

(no rest)

A2: DB Lunges (use same weights) x 20-30

(rest 60 seconds then repeat circuit)

Repeat for multiple sets and feel the burn…

What Is the Fatigue Cycle?

July 29th, 2011 § 0

Life seems to go faster and faster these days. The information age has changed our lives for better or for worse. Access to any kind of information at any time has improved our lives by simplifying the process and delivering it faster than ever. People can go to any search engine on the internet to search for and find any information we need. 24 hour news has made the world a lot smaller place and we can discover events across the globe as they unfold.

Jobs, the economy, commutes, family, kids, never-ending deadlines, multi-tasking and life events can contribute to what some professionals call ‘The Fatigue Cycle.’ News coverage recently showed how our daily routine can lead to high stress which leads to less sleep. Not only does this lead to more car accidents from people falling asleep behind the wheel, it can lead to memory loss and a general feeling of being tired all the time. The saying ‘stress can kill’ seems to adequately describe what stress can do to us.

Somehow, I seem to strive on stress. Deadlines give me a sense of urgency to accomplish a task. It can give me energy and focus and a sense of purpose to ‘deliver.’ The problem occurs when I use that sense of urgency to procrastinate until the last minute so I can have that sense of urgency. As daily routine and deadlines increase, fatigue sets in and I am prone to mistakes. The need to take care of myself is a constant thought, but does not seem to materialize until I make mistakes.

When I wake up in the morning, I seem to have a mental fog and lack of focus. My routine includes a hot shower and strong coffee to get me going. Then sometime mid afternoon, I experience a decrease in energy and that feeling of fatigue. I sometimes feel that I just drag myself through the rest of the day until after my workday. The problem persists though as family and community involvement continue and often there seems there is no relief from the constant fatigue and lack of focus. Exercise and nutrition can help and mental and physical breaks in the form of vacations can help.

Because of economic conditions, I have 2 businesses I manage and my routine includes conference calls on at least 2 evenings during the week. I recently had 2 conference calls scheduled, one at 8 p.m. and the other at 9 p.m. on the same night. I was so tired from the week of 12 hour days, that I fell asleep during the first conference call and completely missed the second one. On weekends I mentor kids and other men and often time do research in preparation for my work week.

Don’t get me wrong. I love my life and what I am doing. Sometimes I just have that feeling of fatigue and lack of mental focus which interferes with my productivity.

A few years ago it seems that ‘energy drinks’ became part of pop culture which seemed to address fatigue and give a ‘shot’ of energy to enable people to perform with renewed energy and mental focus. The advertisements got my attention and I investigated the products. I am constantly concerned with proper nutrition and what I put into my body. I discovered that the advertised energy shots contain an extreme amount of caffeine and sugar that can provide a boost in energy, but eventually leads to a let down or ‘crash’ feeling.

Then in February 2011, a new ‘energy shot’ product called 24K was introduced.. It is based on scientifically blended natural ingredients without any caffeine or sugar. It also includes more that the average daily minimum requirement of Vitamin B.

When I wake up in the morning, I take a 2 ounce shot of Reliv 24K and the mental fog I have clears and I have more focus. I still include a cup or 2 of coffee in the morning and the hot shower. I continue to try to eat right and exercise however infrequently that is at times. At times when I experience that afternoon fatigue, I take an extra shot which helps me continue my day without making the mental mistakes I am prone to.

What Is the Purpose of Health Supplements?

July 11th, 2011 § 0

People quite often ask this question. Some people say that “I am healthy and live a healthy lifestyle, why do I need to take health supplements?” The first reason is that we need to get additional digestive enzymes. There are plant and animal enzymes. Even people who eat raw foods still require some enzyme supplements because raw food comes from other states or countries and sits on the store shelves a long time. The food industry tries to prevent food spoilage by reducing the amount of enzymes in the food to keep it from spoiling.

Vegetables, fruits and grains have natural enzymes within them. Also, most people eat cooked food. Cooking foods at high temperatures destroys enzymes. As a result, our food does not contain natural enzymes which help us digest food properly. When we eat we never chew 50 times as needed. As a result the enzymes are not released.

We also need to supplement our diet with minerals Our foods today are grown in nutrient deprived soils. We assume we are eating healthy food and we are getting enough minerals, but it isn’t the case. Mineral supplementation is required to compensate for the lack of minerals in the soils. Minerals are also related to PH. A lot of people are mostly acidic. Acidic body PH is a cause for many diseases, including cancer. Supplementation, including mineral supplementation, should be taken to bring our body’s PH between 6.4 and 7.0. Acidic PH effects mineral and vitamin absorption. PH is a big concern for our health.

Most people also have a deficit in Omega 3 fatty acids. Omega 3 fatty acids are important for all systems in the body, especially the genitals. Some people think they are in good health. However, it is very rare to find truly healthy people. They may feel good, but inside there is always a weakness. Weaknesses should be supported with supplements. Supplements for the liver, kidneys, the immune system, the brain, etc all help to restore balance. If your body is in balance it will remain in a healthy condition.

Supplements should be taken after special tests have been conducted. For example, people take calcium from the typical grocery store. However, each individual has special needs. Some people require calcium which energetically matches their body type. Before recommending supplements your naturopath physician should do test in order to know the supplements will be most effective.

What Is in a Healthy Diet Plan for Men?

May 31st, 2011 § 0

If you take a look at any of the magazines, you will see headlines on the magazines saying how you can lose 10 pounds in a week or 20 pounds in a year, or they show pictures of women who have lost 100 pounds. The truth is that all of these diets are completely aimed at women and usually will not work for men.

The good news is that, as a man, you have a much faster metabolism than almost any woman on the planet, no matter what type of body you have or how much extra weight you are carrying. Simply by nature, you have more muscle mass and less water weight, and that will help you when you are looking for a healthy diet plan for men.

What Is in a Man’s Diet?

The first thing you will notice about a healthy diet plan for men is that it is full of protein. Most people only eat around 10-20 percent of protein in their diet, and there are some popular diets that go as high as 30 percent. A diet that is specifically designed for a man will often require a higher level of protein. But this doesn’t mean that you can chow down on hamburgers all day! The protein that you eat needs to be low in fat and also much healthier, which will include fish, chicken, and lean pork (no bacon!).

What Isn’t in a Man’s Diet?

Much like any other diet, it is often the things that you stop eating that make all the difference. Obviously, no one wants to sit around keeping a food diary and counting calories, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t be more aware of what you are eating. By eliminating certain basic foods (such as processed starches) and beverages (yes, beer is a killer!), you will be able to lose that extra weight much faster with a healthy diet plan for men.

Do You Have to Work Out?

A healthy diet plan for men will also include a certain amount of working out, but unlike most women’s diet plans, it doesn’t mean that you have to do hours and hours’ worth of aerobics to burn the fat. Because you already have a built-in muscle base that is much higher than most women’s, weight training is a great way for you to lose weight and get toned up in the meantime.

Of course, if you do enjoy walking, running, swimming, or cycling, you will lose weight even faster. But keep an eye on your water intake because when you are dieting, you will tend to lose water faster and that could keep you in a state of dehydration that can slow down your weight loss.

By using a healthy diet plan for men instead of a generic one that is designed for women only, you will find that the results are a lot quicker and that the actual plan is easier for you to handle. Rather than counting calories and running around in a constant state of hunger, you will lose weight with ease.

What Is a Good Diet Plan for Men?

May 31st, 2011 § 0

If you take a look at most of the diet plans that are available, it doesn’t take you long to figure out that they are designed only for women. Finding a good diet plan for men that allows you to eat what you want and eat more than carrots and celery is important if you have any chance of ever sticking to the diet.

If there is one thing about a good diet plan for men, it needs to include the ability to eat out with friends, eat meat, and eat in quantity. Although you may think that all of those are counterintuitive to good dieting, the fact of the matter remains that the best diets are those that enable a man to keep on living his life while losing weight.

Can You Eat Meat?

Unlike most women’s diets, any good diet plan for men will allow you to eat plenty of meat. Because a man’s body has so much more muscle (even if you are out of shape) than a woman’s body, you need protein to feed those muscles. Keeping in mind that the more muscle you have, the greater your metabolic rate, you should really focus on both feeding your muscles protein and working out, too.

Do You Have to Work Out?

With any diet, you never really have to work out, but if you do, not only will you feel better, but you will be burning more calories, putting on muscle, and also raising your resting metabolic rate. That means that whether you are sitting on the couch, watching television, or going for a jog, you will burn more calories than you would if you didn’t work those muscles.

Do You Have to Count Calories?

Counting calories is only one part of a diet, but you don’t always have to do it. The reason why counting calories is generally considered to be important is because it shows you, on paper, how many calories you are taking in versus what you are expending. However, if you are following a good diet plan for men, this won’t be necessary. A proper plan will already have the amount of calories figured out, and all you really have to do is stick to a particular diet, making sure that you get lots of the good foods and none of the bad ones!

The good news is that because you have a higher metabolic rate already than your female counterparts, losing weight is much easier for you than it is for a woman. When she loses one pound a week, you might lose three or five with the right kind of good diet plan for men.

With all weight loss, remember that slower is always better since it will result in long-term weight loss. Although you may want to lose all of your extra weight in a week or a month, doing it slower will mean that you can keep it off longer and it will be easier on your body, too.
