Digestive Health and the Elderly

December 26th, 2011 § 0

It’s a fact that as we grow older illness and disease are much more common but we can do plenty to fight them off. The elderly can enjoy good digestive health well into the golden years but diet modification is very important.

Growing older presents important factors to be aware of if you want to diminish the chances of poor digestive health;

As we age there is a greater chance in getting enzyme deficiencies due to the lack of foods being able to be digest properly, resulting in malnutrition which can cause many health problems.

Add to that the growing years of eating a low-nutrient diet and it’s only a matter of time before the body starts to falter. We can prolong this inevitable process by many years simply by adding more nutrients to our diet.

Young and old, we all consume far too many highly processed foods we but in the supermarkets. Packaged foods can taste great but they simply do not add enough nutrients for your body’s needs.

The human body can do miracles if given the proper ammunition, and that means quality nutrients from real food.

Good digestive health depends upon good amounts of beneficial bacteria to outnumber the bad bacteria that are residing in our gut. An enzyme deficiency that is so common with the elderly can rob the good bacteria of many needed nutrients.

How to increase your digestive enzymes

The typical American processed foods diet many of us are far too guilty of consuming actually add very little quality nutrients to our digestive system, therefor it’s important to add a little bit of this, and eliminate a lot of that…

Eliminate as much processed food as possible. This includes things like ice cream, pies and pastries, anything made with white flour such as bread, crackers doughnuts etc, because white flour clogs our digestive system.

Add more unrefined grains, which are the brown versions of these pre-mentioned foods, such as whole grain breads and brown rice etc. Also eat more fresh fruits and raw vegetables. These will add many more vitamins, minerals and enzymes to your body. Another very important ting is the dietary fiber these foods have as well.

Fiber comes in the form of prebiotics, which have been proven to support probiotics, or the good bacteria in our gut that is vital for good digestive health.

Prebiotic food sources

Prebiotics are found in some of the natural foods mentioned above; fruits vegetables and whole grains. many people are concerned about adding probiootics but scientists now realize that this probiotic bacteria alone is not enough because it is not self-supporting. It relies on the powerful nutrients supplied by prebiotics.

Learn how to improve digestive health with quality prebiotic supplements loaded with enzymes and fiber.

Foods for Health – Natural Foods That Help Reduce Weight Gain

December 23rd, 2011 § 0

A very important but less known fact is that there are some foods, when eaten help reduce weight because they are low on calories, and tend to make people feel full for longer; this in turn helps a person reduce weight since a person eats less. However, most food suppressants available today are artificially made and if used frequently may lead to serious side effects and affect the health of an individual.

Therefore, any one looking to reduce weight should ensure that they include some of these natural food suppressants:

Celery

This is a great vegetable that can be used to reduce weight through naturally suppressing appetite. It is very low on calories with a cup containing less than 16 calories and very rich in fiber- this is what makes you feel full for longer. As an additional bonus, celery tastes good and is crunchy when chewed making it an ideal food to be used as a weight loss food. It is one of the best foods that a health and fitness enthusiast may engage in since a person may eat as much as they want without fear of gaining weight.

Lentils

Lentils are powerful food items that have very many benefits not only to the health status of a person but also in any weight loss regime a person may be involved in. Lentils have very many minerals that are important in aiding a person’s metabolism, and are also packed with fibers and proteins.

What makes lentils good natural suppressants is the fact that once in the body, they are digested very slowly and travel through the body’s digestive system in an even slower manner. This has the overall effect of making you feel full for longer- thus you eat less and reduce weight. Additionally, lentils can be cooked in different ways to ensure that they do not become routine foods, they can be made in to dip sauce, soups or as side dishes in a main meal.

Pickles

Pickles which are made from cucumbers are great snacks since they can be eaten at any time. They are low on calories and a person may eat as much as they can without the fear of adding on weight. Additionally, they boost a person’s immune system and help micro flora- which help in the digestion process- develop in the digestive system.

The good thing about pickles is that they are available in different forms- sour, salted, baked and so on meaning that if they are included in any weight loss regime they cannot become boring since there is variety.

However, pickles that have added artificial sweeteners or flavors should be avoided since they will not be of help in a weight loss regime, rather they may lead to a weight gain.

These are some of the foods that a person looking to loss weight or lead a healthy lifestyle should indulge in, most are affordable but more importantly healthy to an individual.

Liquid Health – The Benefits of Proper Hydration

November 2nd, 2011 § 0

What is the best thing to drink?

Water! Water should be 90-95% of all the liquids you consume.

There is no other liquid that is as essential to your health or better than water – not even 100% organic, freshly juiced fruits or vegetables. You can only live minutes without oxygen, only 2-3 days without water and weeks without food. YOU NEED WATER!

Do not believe anyone who says that coffee, soda, fruit juice, etc. is mostly water so it’s all the same and it’s all just as good. That is not true. Every time you drink anything other than water, you are getting mostly useless calories or chemicals that the body needs to deal with; such as added sugar, artificial sweeteners, flavorings, colors, etc.

How much water should you drink?

When in doubt, drink another glass. Studies show and many blood tests I have reviewed reveal most people are chronically dehydrated.

Forget all of those silly rules about drink your weight in pounds in ounces of water or any other such formula. Just drink water all day, every day. The more you sweat, the more you need to drink. So if you are not urinating every few hours (2-3) during the day, you are not drinking enough. Just use that as the test. Drink water, urinate – simple and effective.

Every function of your body needs water to work. Why would you ever compromise your health even for a second because you won’t drink another mouthful of water?

Simple Rules of Hydration:

Drink pure water. Filter tap water to remove as many impurities as possible. A simple under the counter filter with a separate water faucet at your kitchen sink is a good place to start. Only drink filtered water when possible and only cook or prepare other drinks with filtered water.

Drink all day, enough to make you need a trip to the bathroom every few hours. This ensures you are completely hydrated and since one of the main functions for urination is to flush out toxins and poisons, why would you want to keep those in your body any longer than necessary? The more you sweat, the more water you need to drink. Endurance athletes know to stay hydrated. The body shuts down the more dehydrated you get.

HINT: I often have people tell me they don’t like water or drinking water makes them feel sick. Sipping water all day a little at a time is the solution to both problems. If you don’t like water, it’s only because you’ve trained yourself to not like it by drinking too many other flavored beverages. Un-learn this; it is impossible for a person not to like water.

For some variety, you can add some lemon, lime or orange squeezed into some pure water.

And as in all things, there are exceptions to the rule. Drinking some cold or hot brewed green or black tea or other herbal tea is one way to increase the value of water’s natural health benefits. For these benefits, the tea must be consumed without sweeteners.

Last point: What about the other 5-10% of liquids? Anything except the following: soda, diet soft drinks, refined bottled juices or other artificially colored, artificially sweetened and artificially flavored drinks.

Coffee, alcohol, real juices (fruit or vegetable) or tea are all OK in moderation.

Don’t allow yourself to be “conned” into believing that you can get a “full serving” of fruits or vegetables from some refined, commercially prepared “100% natural” beverage. You can’t! DON’T BE FOOLED.

Eat your fruits and vegetables and drink your water.

Juicing for Health and a Better Life

October 10th, 2011 § 0

Health experts say that the key to living a long, healthy life is all about maintaining a balanced diet full of protein, fats, carbohydrates and fiber, especially in the form of fresh vegetables and fresh fruit. Maintaining a life full of such foods will inevitably provide you with a good supply of essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins and minerals. And the best way to consume a great amount of these healthy foods is through juicing.

Juicing has become a popular way to incorporate key ingredients of a healthy diet into your life, quickly and efficiently. By combining fruits and vegetables into a juicing machine, you can easily get the recommended amounts of at least six to eight servings of fruits and vegetables a day.

Juicing for health reasons is the best way to go, because as fruits and vegetables should be a part of every meal, they also should be your first choice for a snack. However, everyone does not always have the time nor desire to consume a whole bowl of fruits or vegetables. But by juicing your foods, you can quickly turn servings of fruits and vegetables into an 8 oz. glass, create a side dish to a meal served with protein, or make a daily snack. And although your juice should be an addition to your regular meals, certain fruits and vegetables do provide calcium, protein, fiber, carbohydrates and essential fatty acids.

Aside from the efficiency of juicing, there are additional reasons why juicing for health is a positive lifestyle. First, you should be aware that when you heat foods, valuable micronutrients and enzymes become damaged, but they do not when juicing. Juicing allows you to receive all the essential components from the foods, and while these essential elements not only help people look and feel better, they also help protect against certain types of cancer, diabetes, and other diseases. Digesting these vitamins and nutrients also lead to a more energetic life, and everyone loves energy.

Another reason juicing for health is the way to go is due to the wider variety of vegetables you will likely consume when they are juiced and not eaten whole. This may include cauliflower, kale, spinach, wheatgrass, parsley, beets, ginger root, collard greens, etc. And while you may never imagine consuming a serving of all these nutritious foods in one sitting, they are much easier to digest when liquefied and turned into a juice. And keep in mind, your vegetable juice can also include berries, citrus, or bananas to enhance the flavor and add more nutritional value.

As fruits and vegetables are the foundation of a healthy life, juicing for health is the best resource to efficiently provide their essential nutrients and recommended daily amount.

Health Claims Sell Food Products: The 10 Most Common Grocery Tricks

July 15th, 2011 § 0

Since America has turned onto somewhat of a “health” kick recently, retailers and grocery stores alike are trying to keep up by adding new “healthy” items geared towards consumers’ wants and needs. However, when grocery shopping, it is very easy to get confused on what is actually healthy. After all, most foods on the shelf are all in the mind of the marketer. Advertisers know the tricks and trades into making you think that you are buying the healthier option, when in reality, you may not be.

Here are the top 10 most common grocery store tricks:

1.) Lightly Sweetened: This simply means sugar is either being replaced by a substitute or the serving size is smaller. Sugar will be replaced with High Fructose Corn Syrup or the serving size will drop to one cup rather than one and a half cups, therefore, tricking the consumer into thinking the item contains less sugar when it fact, it does not.

2.) “Good source of:” This phrase is most common on cereals such as Cheerios, Golden Grahams, etc. “A good source of” simply implies that the food contains a serving of a certain grain. However, they fail to mention that you would have to eat an entire box of Cheerios to get the recommended serving of the “whole grain.”

3.) Multigrain: More and more people are starting to understand the importance of eating whole grains. However, be aware that many “multi-grain” chips and snacks are processed. “Multi-grain” simply only means more than one grain. So people think they are eating many grains, when really they could be eating white flour and bran. Be careful.

4.) Reduced Fat: In products such as wheat thins or microwavable meals, you will often find “reduced fat” on the label. However, these products fail to tell you that the fat is actually switched out for sodium and sugar. Depending on your dietary needs, this could be very important.

5.) Natural: This is a HUGE misconception in today’s grocery store. As more and more people are choosing organic, advertisers are putting the word “natural” into the mix. “Natural” has no standard in federal guidelines. In fact, many processed and refined foods can be considered natural because one ingredient came from the Earth. A great example is peanut butter. Since it is made from peanuts, it can be considered “natural.” Always look for the USDA organic labels to ensure quality.

6.) Reduced Sodium: This is very similar to the “reduced fat” example. A lot of the time the sodium is reduced, but it is then replaced with fat and sugar.

7.) Trans-Fat Free: A lot of marketers put “trans-fat free” on their foods. However, make sure you read the label. Technically, products are considered “trans-fat free” if they have less than.25 grams of trans-fat per serving. The maximum amount of trans-fat is 2 grams per day. So if you purchase a “trans fat free” food that contains.25 grams of trans-fat per serving and eat the whole box, chances are, you have probably exceeded your amount of trans-fat for the day.

8.) Complimentary: This happens mainly at restaurants. Try and opt out on the “complimentary” bread or sides when dining out. For example, one breadstick from the Olive Garden is 150 calories. How many of you eat just one?

9.) Only 90 calories: Many products say only “100 calories” or only “90 calories.” However, they fail to tell you the serving size. Many “100 calorie” packs are actually two serving sizes, which makes the entire package actually 200 calories, not 100.

10.) Whole Wheat: Many companies put “Whole Wheat” on their labels. This is most often seen on products such as breads, crackers, and chips. However, if you look at the ingredient list, the first ingredient is typically called “enriched wheat flour.” This is just a fancy term for white flour. So even though you think you are eating “whole wheat,” you are actually eating white flour. Look for products that say, “100% whole grain” to ensure quality.

What to Look for in a Health and Diet Plan for Men

May 31st, 2011 § 0

With the rate of obesity constantly going up these days, it is amazing that there are so many diet plans out there. You might think that we all have plenty of opportunities to learn about weight loss and eat more healthfully, but somehow it eludes us. If you are carrying a little too much weight, or even if you just want to get stronger and fitter, then finding the right health and diet plan for men is important.

What Type of Diet Is Best?

Before you go on any diet, you should of course be cleared by your doctor to make sure that you are healthy enough to do so. Especially if you are suffering from diabetes, heart disease or any illness that requires you to take prescription medications, you might want to check first to see if there is a particular health and diet plan for men that your doctor suggests.

However, if you are healthy other than just being overweight, it is important that you choose a plan that is specifically designed for men. This may sound obvious, but most men first go on regular diets that are almost always designed for a woman’s body and her slower metabolism. When you are a man, your metabolism goes much quicker and you are more prone to losing weight faster just by making some small changes.

What Changes Should You Make?

Any good health and diet plan for men will give you the guidance you need to eat better and also to work out more efficiently. Although there is no doubt that you can lose weight simply by changing your diet, you will lose weight faster if you work out at the same time. And just because you are dieting, it doesn’t mean that you will be hungry all the time. In fact, one of the hallmarks of any health and diet plan for men is that it provides sufficient nutrition to make working out a viable option.

If you want to lose weight, you don’t have to starve yourself, and you don’t have to eat rabbit food at home while everyone else is going out. By simply making some small lifestyle changes and adopting better eating habits, you will find that your weight starts to fall off fairly quickly. In addition, you can eat foods that make your metabolism go even faster, which will help you lose weight whether you are working out or not.

One change that helps a lot of men right off the bat is changing the way in which meals are eaten. Any dieter will tell you that you should never eat “on the run.” By making sure that you eat sitting down at a table, you will eat less. Also, eating earlier in the day will help to stave off hunger and help rev up your metabolism for the rest of your day. Instead of having one big dinner every night, spread out those meals and you will see that losing weight isn’t as hard as you might think.

Detoxification and Why It Is Critical for Health and Weight Loss

May 26th, 2011 § 0

What is detoxification?

Detoxifying your body is the process of assisting your body to remove elements that are detrimental to your health. Where do these toxins or detrimental elements come from? In today’s world, with thousands of new chemicals being introduced each year, the toxic elements are taken in by your body through the food you eat, water you drink, air you breathe, and through your skin.

Over the centuries, Eastern health masters recognized that balancing and detoxifying the body was imperative. Recently, Western medicine is beginning to understand this also.

Due to the recent popularity of detoxification in the West, a proliferation of health products aimed at accomplishing this process has sprung into being. This in turn has contributed to confusion about why and how one would detoxify their body.

This report is designed for you, if you are confused about the conflicting information out there about this subject.

What Makes Detoxification Important?

Our toxin elimination systems in our bodies, being our digestive system and colon, liver, kidneys, breath and skin, is very capable of neutralizing and eliminating toxins. An overload of toxicity is a major contributor to weight gain, and puts the brakes on weight loss efforts. Some of these toxins come from our own metabolic processes, and if that was the only source of toxicity that our bodies had to deal with, we’d have relatively no issues. However, this is not the case in these times. It is when these systems become overloaded and weakened that the problems begin.

Some of the problems caused by a toxic body range from less than optimal energy levels and weight gain, all the way through major degenerative disease conditions.

Where Do We Get The Toxins?

In the course of your daily life, you could be exposed to harsh chemicals through your work environment. This is the case in some common occupations. One seldom considered source of toxicity is in your own home! Take a look at household cleaners and fresheners you use in your home and see if you can improve the healthfulness of your indoor environment. The processed and chemically treated foods that prevail in our food supply are also a major source of toxicity.

Items such as cigarettes, poor quality foods, caffeine, junk food and soda are all examples which are harmful to your health. Consuming these on a consistent basis harms your body on several levels. All of these considerations in combination can produce a very toxic environment in your body. As they build up in your system over time, they can cause a wide range of issues including weight gain, memory problems and immune system issues.

Detoxification is a natural process that the body accomplishes on its own under normal circumstances. However, when your systems are overloaded and you have a less than optimal diet, it contributes to stress on your body and it is less able to cleanse your system properly.

What Can Be Done About It?

The fist step in detoxifying your body is pretty straight forward. It is to stop putting toxins into your body as much as possible. Doing this may even cause some weight loss on its own. Making the needed changes can be accomplished in baby steps. You don’t have to take everything on at once. It works best to take a look at one area at a time. Look for things that you can do to clean up some small things first, incorporate it into your life, then move on to the next. Before long, you’ll find you’ve incorporated many beneficial new ways into your life, and you will be able to feel the beneficial difference in your body.

Once you’ve made some changes, and see that you’re on the right track, that’s when you should look at some of the many great products and programs that can help you increase and accelerate your journey of health.

Herbs for Health – Garlic

April 1st, 2011 § 0

Perhaps more has been written about the benefits of Garlic, than any other Herb we use. If your Dieting For Health, Garlic is a star. If there is a Herb that can be called a wonder drug, garlic is it.

Records can be traced back thousands of years, showing garlic used as a prescription for medical use. The Egyptians loved garlic so much that is was found in King Tuts tomb. At that time in history, it is reported that Egyptians could buy a healthy male slave for 15 pounds of garlic. But Egypt was not the only country that loved garlic, The entire ancient world from China to Spain and beyond, loved the herb, and still do for that matter.

Garlic has been used from ancient times for everything from being a cooking ingredient used to flavor food, to a remedy for various health problems, to an amulet to protect a person from the spells of witchcraft. Which brings us to: Four Thieves Vinegar

There are many different stories about Four thieves Vinegar but they all boil down to something like this: During the plaque that swept through France in 1721, there were 4 thieves that were becoming wealthy by ransacking the homes of those that died. The plaque was not effecting them. When they were finally captured, they used their secret to avoid being hung, and allowed to walk away free. They gave the secret formula for the disinfectant. They saved their necks and the recipe is still used today.

April 1st, 2011 § 0

Lets talk about the wonders of Ginger. There is an old Indian saying “Every good quality is contained in Ginger” Many health specialists are starting to truly this to be true.

History shows that the Ancient Indians, the Chinese, The Ancient Greeks and the Romans all used Ginger for medical reasons as well as cooking with it.

There have been studies made that show ginger helps prevent the nausea associated with seasickness. other studies show it helps prevent indigestion and abdominal cramping.

Studies show that Ginger helps prevent heart disease by lowering blood pressure, and helps prevent blood clots

Still, other studies show that ginger contains anti-inflammatory substances that help in the treatment of Arthritis.

The list goes on and on. Commission E, which is the German Counterpart to the Food and Drug Administration, endorses Ginger as a treatment for motion sickness.

The American colonies had a stomach soothing drink they called Ginger Beer. It can still be found today. While it has been replaced by Ginger Ale in the states, specialty stores still carry it. If you truly enjoy Ginger Ale, try Ginger Beer, it is a step up, and it does not contain alcohol.

The next time you feel that you are coming down with a cold, try a cup of two of Hot ginger tea;

Honey and lemon to taste.

Simmer the ginger root in the water for about 10 minutes. Then let it set for another 5 minutes. Strain. Add honey and lemon if desired. Honey is a natural sweetener and much better in ginger tea than sugar,.

If you visit an Asian food store, you can find instant Ginger tea with honey already in it. It is sold in containers that have about 30 packets inside. Read the label carefully, some come with Honey while others contain white or brown sugar. You want the one that contains only Ginger and Honey.

Complementary Health – Simple, Safe New Breakthroughs in Complementary Health Therapies

March 28th, 2011 § 0

Complementary Health and Complementary Therapies are important to consider these days as all major disease rates continue to rise. Such illnesses as heart disease, cancer, diabetes can become chronic with age and are usually major quality of life detractors. Yet according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC) all of these conditions are preventable, along with a number of other CDC listed illnesses.

Complementary Health looks at how illness begins. According to official Continuing Medical Education (CME), classes my wife attended during our health challenge with our son, all known (non-genetic and non-tramatic) illness BEGINS with oxidative stress at the cellular level. This can be understood by cutting an apple in half and leaving it on the counter for about 20 minutes. When you come back some of it has turned brown – that’s oxidative stress. Now this happening to the cells in our bodies constantly. Whether it’s poor water quality that you swallow, a trace of pesticides on food, poor food choices, pollution/fumes in the air you breath or just the stress of everyday living – all of these factors and more cause oxidative stress.

So simply “living life” results in our bodies experiencing this stress at the cellular level. Ah,…but there is an anti-aging type solution we discovered (cost us $3,000 to learn and then publish) during our families health struggle. You’ve heard of the answer: Antioxidants. But did you know that new complementary health science has shown that of 90 products on the grocery store shelves touting “antioxidant loaded”, 3 had a pro-oxidizing effect (the opposite of what your body needs) and the other 87 didn’t fair well in their power to combat this cellular stress.

The actual measuring unit for this is ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorption Capacity) and various marketing agencies use various measures to mislead the public. They will put an ORAC value for the whole bottle or container instead of an ORAC per serving or per gram. If you are going to try to take care of your health in this very wise way, by adding back to your diet documented missing nutrients and missing antioxidants, you should compare “grams per serving” between products. If you want a powerful, scientifically and clinically documented antioxidant and you want your investment to be PAY YOU BACK via outstanding health and less colds/flus, etc. – you should look for an ORAC above 15,000 units per gram.

There are very few antioxidants which can provide this level of complementary health protection but I am thankful to have learned the key point,… that oxidative stress at the cellular level is the root beginning point for most all illnesses. Therefore, you can do something simple and with very little cost to invest into your most valuable asset – Your Health & Quality of Life. I’m thankful for such lessons and I wanted to share this with you. To your health and Optimum Quality of Life!
